ABOUT
Nestled in a picturesque carriage house in Norfolk, CT, in the heart of the Litchfield Hills, Joseph Stannard Antique and Design is a quintessential New England destination for collectors, designers, and lovers of authentic interiors. Joseph Stannard Antiques presents French furniture and decorative arts from the 18th through the early 20th century—ranging from country‑elegant dining tables, buffets, armoires, and mirrors to refined salon pieces, lighting, and decorative accessories suited to both rustic estates and more formal, elegant interiors.
The carriage house gardens showcase a wide-ranging collection of 18th century water garden elements, planters, and landscape features: stone cider presses, antique troughs, basins, millstones, wells, and outdoor furniture for lawn and terrace that belong on a village green or an oak‑shaded terrace.
Much of Joseph Stannard Design® is conceived and created a short distance away at his production studio and workshop in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. The JSD pieces fuse antique elements with modern restraint to bring a quietly refined, singular flair to country estates, elegant city residences, and contemporary interiors.

Until very recently, only a handful of designers and private clients have had the opportunity to peek into the Joseph Stannard Design® studio. It is here that antiquarian becomes artist, designing energetic yet refined one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces that have provided distinctive additions to a variety of settings — cutting edge city lofts, upscale post and beam barns, traditional urban interiors appointed with period antiques, distinguished exterior spaces at rural retreats.
A keen knowledge of Continental and American antiques clearly informs the creations in The Joseph Stannard Design® Collection. The unpretentiously sophisticated dining tables, desks, coffee tables, chairs, and lighting may best be described as "savvy classic" — classic with an explicit contemporary sensibility expressed through materials such as bronze, iron, stone, and specialty woods. Find many of these pieces on display and for sale at 8 Station Place, Norfolk, CT.
From early spring through spectacular New England autumns, visitors may stroll our carriage house grounds and perennial gardens to view timeless French antique granite pieces used as water garden features; lushly planted containers; and remarkable natural landscape elements. Our extensive display includes ancient stone cider presses, large hand-hewn antique troughs, smaller antique garden basins and troughs, carved rustic millstones, striking 18th century granite fence posts, wellheads, and architectural ornaments.
We also import a variety of French antique tables, chairs, benches, and other antiques for garden, lawn, and terrace — all displayed against a backdrop of espaliered apple trees, waves of lavender, billowy tufts of scented thyme.

Our showrooms are characteristically brimming with diverse pieces imported directly from France, where we personally select every item for its classic French provincial spirit and charm, while paying careful attention to its authenticity. We do not import reproductions.
Country-elegant dining tables in a wide range of styles and sizes, regional buffets, handsome armoires, mirrors, lighting, as well as unusual ornamental objects are specialties.
