Frequently Asked Questions
What types of antiques do you specialize in?
We focus on eighteenth and nineteenth century European and American furniture, architectural elements, folk art, and distinctive objects with strong form and honest age. Our collection also includes outdoor elements such as garden antiques, stone pieces, and sculptural forms suited for exterior spaces. Each piece is selected for craftsmanship, material quality, and visual presence.
Are your pieces authentic antiques?
Yes. Every item is vetted for age, construction, and provenance. We document period details such as joinery, tool marks, and surface history to ensure accuracy and transparency.
What about Wear and Surface History?
Authentic antique and vintage pieces naturally show wear, surface history, and patina consistent with their age. These characteristics are part of their integrity and are expected in well‑preserved period furniture and objects. We note any significant restorations or structural considerations in the listing, and additional photos or details are available upon request.
Can I see a piece in person?
Yes. Our showrooms at 8 Station Place in Norfolk, Connecticut, are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 to 4. We are also happy to schedule weekday appointments for clients who would like to view a piece in person or discuss it in more detail.
Do you ship?
Yes. We ship throughout the United States and internationally. We work with trusted carriers experienced in handling antique furniture and fragile objects.
How are shipping costs calculated?
Shipping is quoted individually based on size, weight, destination, and carrier method. We aim for safe transport and clear communication throughout the process.
What is your return policy?
Joseph Stannard Antiques and Design accepts returns within seven days of pickup. All items must be returned in the same condition in which they left the store. A ten percent restocking fee applies to all returns.
Do you accept returns on custom pieces?
Custom and made-to-order pieces are final sale.
Do you offer custom sizing for furniture?
Yes. Joseph Stannard Design offers custom sizing for many of our furniture forms, including tables, consoles, and select case pieces. Each design is built to order in our workshop, which allows us to adjust scale, proportion, and materials to suit your space. We can also develop entirely new designs with additional lead time. Share your dimensions or inspiration, and we will guide you through the process.
Do you offer design or styling services?
We provide guidance on placement, scale, and pairing antiques with contemporary interiors. Our goal is to help each piece feel at home in its new setting.
How do I care for antique furniture?
Most pieces require minimal care. We recommend gentle dusting and avoiding harsh cleaners. If a piece has special surface considerations, we note that in the listing, and we are always happy to discuss proper care and cleaning for any item in our collection.
Are the dimensions exact?
Measurements are taken carefully, but slight variations may occur due to irregularities in antique forms. If you need precise clearance information, we are happy to remeasure.
Can I place an item on hold?
We can place a short hold on select pieces for clients who need time to confirm fit or shipping details. Contact us directly to arrange this.
Do you work with designers?
Yes. We welcome inquiries and collaborate regularly with interior designers, stylists, and landscape architects.
