French Granite Millstone
This early 18th-century French granite millstone ranks high on our list of all-time favorites for its form, color, and excellent antique condition. By our lights, the stone's overall appeal stems from its beautifully weather-worn surface and the somewhat rounded shape of its use-worn rim. Of course, being adorned here and there with small pillows of moss and swatches of gray-green lichen doesn't hurt.
Although originally used to crush apples in the circular channel of an early granite cider press--most likely somewhere in Normandy-- it's not difficult to imagine the piece as a singular garden element capable of enhancing a variety of 21st-century settings from the most floriferous country garden to the sparest contemporary landscape.
Lastly, should you have an antique stone press, a horse, the requisite operator's manuals, and a yen for gallons of cider, seize the day! Bushels of apples at the ready? So much the better!
