Dutch Speculaas Gingerbread and Cake Mold, Two-Sided Folk Art Carving, 1870

 Antique two-sided Dutch speculaas gingerbread cake and cookie mold, dated 1870 and carved from dense hardwood, measures 32 inches by 13 inches and stands firmly within the tradition of nineteenth-century European folk art. One side presents a pair of horses with riders framed by floral motifs and an inscribed banner carved in reverse for proper printing in dough, while the reverse shows two figures in period dress positioned beneath large wheels in a lively narrative scene. The carvings display deep relief and crisp linework, and the surface carries a warm, age-earned patina with wear consistent with use.
